Progress in Lake County.

 

[Under this title we give a series of short sketches, descriptive of the time of immigration of each settler in the county, with amount of improvement, present and future prospects;  crops raised in 1878; grain sown last Fall, &c.  Also, sketches of manufacturing and business interests.  Correspondence is solicited from all interested in the growth and prosperity of our county.

Geo. TempleSettled on the north half of the northwest quarter and north half of northeast quarter section 2, Dover township, in the Spring of 1872.  The soil is clay and sand; beech and maple timber, chiefly; good water from springs.  Has about 10 acres improved; log house and barn.  Has apple, cherry and small fruits; and has left maple and “pig hickory” for shade.  In 1878, had 4 acres timothy, 3 acres corn and 1/3 acre potatoes.

Luther J. JenksSettled on the east half of southwest and west half of southeast quarter section 34, Pleasant Plains township, in the Fall of 1871.  Soil, sand plains; water from a well 20 feet deep.  Has about 50 acres improved; log house and stable; board barn.  Has apple, cherry and small fruits, and left original oaks for shade.  Keeps 2 horses, 1 ox, 4 cows, 4 young cattle, 2 hogs and poultry.  In 1878, had 6 acres wheat, 8 acres corn, 4 acres oats, 5 acres buckwheat, ¾ acre potatoes, 6 acres rye and one acre rutabagas (150 bushels); and sowed 6 acres wheat, last Fall.

Geo. W. CasterSettled on the southwest quarter section 8, Webber township, in the Summer of 1872.  The soil is sand, plains and pine.  Has a frame house, and is building a new log house.  Has 150 apple and cherry trees, with small fruits, and left original oaks for shade.  In 1878, had 3 acres wheat, 8 acres corn, 1 acre oats, 2 acres potatoes (150 bushels), ½ acre beans, 5 acres timothy and 1 acre rutabagas (100 bushels).  Sowed 14 acres wheat, last Fall, seeding the ground to timothy.  Has 18 acres improved.

Milton Ruttey—Settled on the northeast quarter section 18, Webber township, in the Fall of 1878.  Soil, sand plains.  Cleared 3 acres and sowed to wheat, last Fall, and intends to make a farm.  This place was originally entered by John Shafer.

Enos McMastersSettled on the south half of the northeast and south half of the northwest quarter section 4, Webber township, in the Spring of 1875.  The soil is sand, plains; water from a well, 48 feet deep.  Has a log and frame house, log barn; and about 5 acres improved.  Has some apple, peach and small fruits.  Keeps 2 cows, 2 young cattle and poultry.  In 1878, had 2 acres wheat, 1 acre corn, 1 acre potatoes and 1 acre rye.  Sowed 2 acres wheat, last Fall.

John WoolfordSettled on the southeast quarter section 4, Webber township, in the Fall of 1871.  The soil is sand, plains; water from a well, 15 feet deep, and a lake.  Has about 4 acres improved; frame house, log barn; and keeps 1 cow, 2 young cattle and poultry.  Had corn, potatoes and a good garden, last year.

John MathiasSettled on the northwest quarter section 8, Webber township, in the Fall of 1873.  Soil, sand plains; 9 acres improved.  Has frame house, and about 150 apple, cherry and pear trees, with small fruits.  Has material for a frame house, 16x20 feet, two stories high.

Abel M. GibbsSettled on the west half of the southwest quarter section 2, Chase township, in the Fall of 1869.  Soil, sandy loam and clay; water from a well, 28 feet deep, besides spring and stream.  Buildings, of log.  Has some apple and cherry trees; part of them bearing.  Has about 35 acres improved, and keeps 2 horses, a cow and poultry.  Has been off his place for two or three years; but is working it this season.  Sowed 17 acres wheat; last Fall.

Seymour FowlerSettled on the south half of the southeast quarter section 32, Chase township, in the Spring of 1872.  The soil is gravelly; about 10 acres improved.  Buildings, log house, frame barn, 30x40 feet.  Also, owns and now resides on the northeast of the southeast and the southeast of the southeast quarter section 35,same township, where he has a frame barn, and is building a frame house.  Beech and maple timber; about 40 acres improved.  Water from a well, 14 feet deep, and several springs.  Has about 100 apple, plum and cherry trees, most of them bearing; also, some grape.  Keeps 2 horses, 2 cows, 2 yearlings, 5 hogs and poultry; and in 1878, raised, on both farms, 4 acres wheat, 5 acres corn, 2 acres oats, 1 acre buckwheat, 1 acre potatoes, 2 acres barley and 4 acres timothy.  Sowed 8 acres wheat, last Fall.

John C. DemingSettled on the southwest quarter of the southwest quarter section 9, Chase township, in the Fall of 1876.  The soil is sandy loam; fine spring water.  Log house and barn.  Has started a few apple trees.  Some original maples were left for shade.  Had 225 bushels potatoes from an acre of ground, last year.  About 25 acres improved.  This place was originally bought by Wm. Messenger.

Nicholas HoskinSettled on the southeast quarter of the northwest and the southwest quarter of the northeast quarter section 20, Chase township, in the Fall of 1871.  The soil is sandy (pine land).  About 6 acres improved; hewed log house.  Mr. H. is now on the southeast quarter of southwest quarter section 10, same township.  The soil is sandy loam and clay; water from well 7 feet deep.  Has frame house, 14x20 feet; 7 acres improved.  Has 125 apple, cherry and crab apples.  Keeps 2 oxen, a cow and poultry.  In 1878, had 2 ½ acres wheat, 1 acre corn, 4 acres oats, ¾ acre buckwheat, 1 acre potatoes (125 bushels) and 2 ½ acres timothy.  Sowed 7 acres wheat, last Fall.

Wm. CooperSettled on the northwest quarter of northwest quarter section 15, Chase township, in the Fall of 1877.  Soil, sandy loam and clay; with abundance of water from springs and stream.  Has about 3 acres cleared; a hewed log house, and for fruit, apple, cherry, pear and small fruits.  Sowed ¾ acre wheat, last Fall.

Benj. RinglerSettled on the southeast quarter of section 9, Chase township, in Fall of 1874.  The soil is sandy loam and clay; water from spring.  About 25 acres improved; frame house, log stable.  Has apple, cherry, pear and small fruits; and Balm of Gilead for shade and ornament.  Keeps 2 oxen, 3 cows, 4 young cattle, 7 hogs, 5 sheep and poultry; and in 1878, had 4 acres wheat, 3 acres oats, 1 ½ acres potatoes, 2 acres peas and 3 acres tame pasture.  Sowed 2 acres wheat, last Fall.

James R. DavisSettled on the south half of the northwest quarter section 10, Chase township, in the Fall of 1869.  The soil is sandy loam and clay; water from spring and creek.  About 10 acres improved.  Has a log house, log stable, frame cooper shop.  Fruit, apple, cherry and small fruits.  Left some original hemlocks for shade and ornament.  Keeps 1 horse, 2 oxen, 1 cow, 3 young cattle, 7 sheep and poultry; and in 1878, had 3 acres wheat, 1 acre corn, ¾ acre potatoes and ½ acre rutabagas (150 bushels).

W. C. WheatonSettled on the south half of the southeast quarter section 8, Chase township, in the Spring of 1868.  Soil, sand and clay loam.  Log house, frame granary.  Abundance of fine spring water; also, creek.  Has about 90 apple trees, some of them bearing, with cherry, plum and small fruits.  Keeps 2 oxen, 2 cows, 4 young cattle, 6 hogs and poultry.  In 1878, he had 6 acres wheat, 2 ½ acres corn, 1 acre oats, 2 acres buckwheat, 1 ¼ acres potatoes (220 bushels) and 2 acres timothy (3 tons).  Sowed 2 acres wheat, last Fall; and now has seeded to timothy, about 12 acres.

W. M. ParkerSettled on the east half of the northwest quarter section 18, Pinora township, in the Winter of 1873.  Soil, gravel; about 15 acres improved; log house and barn.  Left pine for shade and ornament.  In 1878, had 1 ½ acres wheat, 2 acres corn, 2 acres buckwheat, ½ acre potatoes (75 bushels), ½ acre beans, 3 acres rye and ½ acre rutabagas (100 bushels).  Is setting out a variety of apple trees, this Spring.  Sowed 8 acres wheat and 2 acres rye, last Fall.
