Mrs. Esther Linberg will spend Christmas with her daughters, Joyce Simpson and family and Linnea Oliver and family of Battle Creek.

It’s a beautiful morning.  Ground all covered with a blankey of immaculate snow.  Yesterday, wherever you went, you heard the strains of “White Christmas,” sung by Bing Crosby.  Bing makes it sound like a prayer coming from the depths of your soul.  Yesterday, I attended the service at Irons.  The first time I had been in a church in about thirty years, except for a wedding or funeral, and, you know, surprising as it may seem, the building didn’t fall down, like the walls of Jeriko.  I should get the habit and go more often.

The thermometer is at 15 degrees this morning, the wind calm, and about four inches of snow on the ground.  The sky is overcast, but it isn’t snowing.  A car just drove by, kind of fast so I guess the roads aren’t slippery.  A snow plow just went by.  By golly, we’ve got the best road service in the state.  Lake county tops them all.

Christmas day, I spent, as usual, with the Ed Kasper family.  Had a wonderful dinner and a very enjoyable day.  They have sort of adopted us old bachelors, Frank Thomas and myself.  We have Christmas dinner with them every year.  Before he died, Tony Mitchell was one of us as a guest.  I don’t remember how I got home, but my car is in the garage and no dents in the fenders.  Maybe some good Samaritan drove me home.  In the evening, several friends and neighbors dropped in for a visit and a game of cards.

December 17th, Mr. and Mrs. George Parmentier and Mr. and Mrs. Harry (he likes to be called Zip Tompson, attended a Christmas party at Hyde Park YMCA in Chicago.  They represented the Martin Johnson Camp.  About 120 people are at the camp this week from Chicago, for some fun at Ward Hills Ski complex.  The slopes should be in good shape.

Dick Killian celebrated his 31st birthday on December 17.  Dick is one of our reliable bowlers on the Fun Spot Lanes team.

Fran Britt celebrated her birthday on December 24.  Mr. and Mrs. Britt spent Christmas with her brother, Bud Dangl in Grand Rapids.

A lot of people went away for Christmas.  Mr. and Mrs. William Astles went to Williamston to visit her daughter and her family.  Mr. and Mrs. Maury Schmidt to Kalamazoo, to visit their sons and their families.  Mr. and Mrs. Harry Thompson to visit Vi’s children, Bud VanderHenst and family, and daughter, June Bork and family.  The next day they went to Hastings to visit Zip’s daughter, Agnes Hollister and family and his son, H. B. Thompson and family.  Mr. and Mrs. Ed Shaughnessy went to Detroit to visit their children in that area.  Helen recently returned from a visit to their daughter, Mrs. Wilma Jones, in Orange, Calif.

Last week I erroneously reported that Mr. and Mrs. Lindberg went to Sweden.  Lindy is with his folks in Landskrona, Sweden for Christmas, will return about Jan. 4.  Meantime, Esther is chief cook and bottle washer at Oak Grove Tavern in Irons.

Chuck Shaughnessy is in the glazing business in Wellston.  See ad in the Star.

Jack Fletcher has his pickup all rigged up for snow plowing.  It looks like he can start working now.  He gave me his renewal subscription for the Star.  I also got a renewal for Henning Johnson, in Chicago.  I hear Henning isn’t feeling so good these days.  Hope this finds him feeling better.

Got a renewal for Mickey Wahr, of Lansing.  Also one for Vic Wahr.  Mickey and his family are here visiting his folks, Mr. and Mrs. Vic Wahr.  Their daughter Elaine and her husband Don Gallagher and family are visiting them over Christmas.  The Gallaghers are now living in Grand Rapids.

Many got their wish, “Snow for Christmas,” the children will enjoy their vacation and have fun in the snow.

Christmas eve services were were held at the First Baptist church of Baldwin, Rev. C. W. Wingfield, pastor.  Sermon was delivered most excellent and very short by Rev. N. Perry, pastor of St. James church in Woodland Park.  M. C. of the service was Rev. J. C. Ray, and the pulpit guest was Rev. Moses Garrison, who prayed the opening prayer.  Services were surrounding the coming event, “The Birth of Christ Child.”

Mrs. Lucille Smith is serving a chittling dinner for the benefit of the choir January 6.  She is asking all who know her to assist in her effort, if you can not attend and want a dinner, she will deliver, just phone her.

Watch meeting service will be held at the Tabernacle A.M.E. church December 31, you are invited to attend.

Sunday morning service at the A.M.E. church was enjoyed by a short sermon by Rev. Ray, then the Christmas Cantata by the choir, which was most excellent.  Reader was Mrs. Nina Hill.  Soloists were Madams H. Summers, F. Mathis, E. Mayne, David Mallette and Buck Brooks, also a violin number by Miss D. Dobbins and a duet by Miss Dobbins and Miss Greer.  Three selections by the entire choir, then two numbers by the Jr. Choir.

An appetizing Christmas repass was served by Mrs. Ray.  Visitors were Mt. and Mrs. Oather Dean of Bitley and Mrs. Josie Wright of Chicago.

Mrs. Walter Bayak delivered Christmas cheer to the shut-ins, and the Bray Missionary gave each shut-in member a Santa chimney of goodies.

A surprise birthday dinner honoring Mrs. Pearl M. Marshall was given at the home of Leona B. Simmon Thursday evening by Henrietta Summers, Muriel Castallante and Mrs. Simmons.  Mrs. Marshall was very much elated.

Clark Bullett and Ralph Castallante of Idlewild Fire Dept., have just returned from Chicago, where they have been assisting Marcheta Dayle with, “Operation Christmas Basket.”  Quite an undertaking by the Daddy – O – Daylie enterprises there.

Mrs. Josie Wright of Chicago is visiting with her cousin, Mrs. Leona B. Simmons for the Christmas holidays.

The Idlewild Fire Dept. had their annual Christmas party Saturday night.  There was fun, food and drink for everyone.  Exchange of gifts by the firemen.  This was indeed an enjoyable evening.  Paul Hoskins was chairman, Geno and Lindsey were responsible for the delicious food.  Such excellent cooking, turkey, dressing, ham, green beans, sweet potatoes, salads, cakes, and pies.  This organization deserves a large round of applause.

The Union Missionary meeting will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at the Church of God on US-10, pastor Elder Livingston, at 11:00.  Installation of officers will be held, please be present.

On Friday, Dec. 29, the President Council will meet with Sister S. Dillard at Woodland Park.  This will be the last meeting of the year.  O. L. Winston, pres.

Evergreen Chapter No. 51, held their election of officers.

I could not finish my news this week because of burns I received at home.
